William Hambly

William Hambly was a boot and shoemaker whose boot warehouse (according to the Australasian Federal Directory) were located on 86 Sturt Street, Ballarat.^[1]

He was born in Truro in 1822 and was apprenticed to learn the drapery trade for three years from age seventeen onwards. He subsequently found work in the trade in Buckinghamshire for several years. In 1851 he left for the United States and spent two years in prospecting. In 1853, having heard of the gold finds in Australia he left California for Sydney and to Ballarat the following year. ^[2]

In 1856, he entered into a partnership to form a boot establishment called Gimblett and Hambly. in 1861 Gimlett retired and Hambly took over the business as a sole proprietor. In 1891, he took his son D. Hambly, into business with him. ^[3]
