Background

Wilson's Orchard was established by Francis Wilson at Brown Hill, Victoria in 1887.[1]

History

Francis Wilson was married to Martha. They sailed to Australia in 1857 on the Morning Light in 1857, and settled in Doncaster {now a suburb of Melbourne) where they established an orchard. In 1885 Francis Wilson made his way to Pootilla in search of work, and later bought land in Brown Hill. This land was converted to orchards which were still in production over 100 years later.[2] Their market garden grew strawberries, gooseberries and vegetables which were carted regularly to Levy's market in Curtis Street.

At one time five orchards from Brown Hill to the Western Highway were operated by different members of the Wilson Family.

In 1985 the Wilsons had a full time fruit and vegetable store which operated 12 months per year.
